Fleeing the bankruptcy of his dry goods business in his native Scotland, William Notman arrived in Montreal in 1856 and set himself up as a portrait and landscape photographer. The author outlines Notman's early career in Montreal that would eventually see him owning the largest photography business in nineteenth-century North America.
