Abstract
Following the 1794 signing of the Jay Treaty between Great Britain and the United States, German-American businessman John Jacob Astor (1763-1848)entered into a business arrangement with the Montreal-based North West Company to import furs from Montreal to New York for trans-shipment to Europe.
