Queer(ing) Italo-Québécois Literature
Abstract
The author notes that there are approximately 316,000 residents of Italian heritage in Quebec; Italian is the fifth most spoken language in Montreal. A growing number of Italian Quebecers identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community. They are openly queer outside the family circle and beyond the Italian community. Traditionally, the queer experience is not discussed or even acknowledged in Italian immigrant households. It’s not a topic for Sunday lunch with the family. The author explores the cultural production of Quebec English-language writers who function at the intersection of ethnicity and sexual identity: the LGBTQ+ and the Italian community. She introduces the writing of established and emerging literary artists: Steve Galluccio, Christopher DiRaddo, Liana Cusmano (aka BiCurious George), Vee DG (aka Vanessa Di Gregorio), Anthony Portulese and others. These writers are the children or grandchildren of Italian immigrants to Quebec, and they identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community.
