Abstract
The results of a 1979 survey of the penetration of Francophone and Anglophone media (written and electronic) among Quebecers of various linguistic origins, and to see if the situation evolved between 1971 and 1979. Among the conclusions discovered by the authors: Francophones showed the least interest in reading books: seventy percent of Anglophones read at least one book in the three months preceding the survey, fifty-eight percent of Allophones and fifty-three percent of Francophones did the same; Anglophones more often than Francophones or Allophones read books related to their work; Anglophones were twice as likely than Francophones to go to the movies during the period surveyed; while French- and English-speaking readers read newspapers published in their language in identical proportions (ninety-eight percent), the authors found that the two groups differ somewhat in the reading of newspapers in their second language. English-language newspapers were read by only nineteen percent of Francophone readers, while French-language newspapers attract thirty-four percent of Anglophone readers. Allophone readers were more likely to read English-language dailies (sixty-six percent) than French-language dailies (sixty-one percent). Anglophones and Allophones were twice as likely (thirty-three percent) as Francophones (eighteen percent) to read newspapers in both languages.
