Abstract
A short biography of Andrew Macphail (1864-1938) who, at various times in his life, was a school teacher, journalist, physician, playwright, editor, soldier, novelist and university professor. Beginning in 1885, Macphail began a lifelong association with Montreal. In 1891 he received his medical degree from McGill, practiced and taught at the University of Bishop's College (1893-1905) and also served as a consulting pathologist at Montreal's Western and Verdun hospitals. In 1907 he was appointed McGill University's first professor of the history of medicine. In 1903 Macphail was appointed editor of the Montreal Medical Journal which, eight years later, merged with another medical journal to become the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ). Macphail was editor of the CMAJ until the outbreak of the First World War.
