Title
1944 : A Year in the Life of a Montreal Orthodox Rabbi
Abstract
The author examines the 415 entries for 1944 in the ledger of Montreal Orthodox Rabbi Yehoshua (Sheea) ha-Levi Herschorn (1893-1969) and discusses what they indicate about Montreal Jews in that critical wartime year. The author's analysis allows him to reconstruct in some detail the daily activities of a Montreal Orthodox rabbi. The author's research also provides insight into the city's Jewish community in both expected and unusual ways. His research provides insight into the Jewish community of Montreal in 1944 in which life in many respects continued relatively normally, and yet the magnitude of the Second World War impinged on the life of Montreal Jews in both expected and unusual ways. The author's investigation yields information on the way rabbinical activities in areas such as marriage, divorce, and conversion were undertaken in the Montreal Jewish community in that year. The author notes that the research contributes to a better and more nuanced understanding of the multiplicity of issues and challenges facing Orthodox rabbis and, by extension, Orthodox Judaism in Montreal in this transitional period.
