Title
Le long de la Main cosmopolite : Promouvoir, vivre et marcher le boulevard Saint-Laurent à Montréal
Abstract
The author points out that in Montreal, Saint-Laurent Boulevard alone sums up the different dimensions of the city's cosmopolitanism. She observes that the artery is as much a break in the city - the border between the "two solitudes", French and English - as it is a seam, since it has been a place of welcome for newcomers throughout the twentieth century . Along this traditional immigration corridor, which has become a space for exchanges and stories, the various expressions of cosmopolitanism (commercial, political and cultural) meet and sometimes confront one another. The author argues that this heritage street has been marked by the imprint of different powers and subject to multiple influences, and subjected to contrasting policies in search of images and strategies. Highly valued in urban marketing, Saint-Laurent and its neighborhoods remain privileged places for the incarnation of the Montreal identity and the setting for some of its most remarkable figures and ambiance.
