Title
The Danes of Montreal: The Use of History and the Meaning of Success
Abstract
The author discusses a public history project she conducted for the Danish community of Montreal in the 1990s. The Danish community expected that the research would help them recover a more authentic ethnicity and shine a light on their group's unique cultural practices. However, to the community's disappointment, the historical research revealed a strong trend towards Anglo conformity, to the point that many Danish Canadians were nearly indistinguishable in Montreal's larger Anglophone society.
