Abstract
The idea of establishing a denominational college for young women in the Anglican Deanery of Bedford, in the Eastern Townships, was first submitted to the Montreal Synod in 1873. The Anglo-Protestant village of Dunham was chosen for the school, and in 1879 the Dunham Ladies College opened. In 1913, the school changed its name to St. Helen’s School. The author demonstrates the importance of religion in the construction of the students’ social identities – education being the means used by the local and diocesan Anglican male elite to promote the new spiritual mandate of the Church and their conservative vision of women in society.
