Le Théâtre Royal de la rue Côté : 1851-1913
Abstract
The fourth theatre in Montreal to bear the name Théâtre Royal, this new theatre on rue Côté opened for English-language performances in July 1852 under the management and artistic direction of Americans John Wellington Buckland and W. Corbyn. Except for a brief period in 1868 and 1869, Buckland managed the Royal until his death in November 1872. Buckland's wife, the Irish-born actress Kate M. Horn (c.1826-1896) took over the management of the theatre on her husband's death until her retirement in 1880. The management of the theatre was then taken over by John Bolingbroke Sparrow (1852-1914).
