Abstract
An historic, economic and political description of Hull, and its leading citizens, from the days of the French regime to 1920. The city was founded on the north shore of the Ottawa River in 1800 by American-born Philemon Wright (1760-1839) at the portage around the Chaudière Falls. Wright brought with him 37 men, 5 women, and 21 children, as well as 14 horses and 8 oxen, with the intention of establishing an agricultural community. However, it was not long before Wright took advantage of the large lumber stands in the area and became involved in the lucrative timber trade. In 2002, the City of Hull, along with four other municipalities, were merged to form the City of Gatineau.
