Abstract
A study of the mostly Anglo-merchant class of Lower Canada from the mid-eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century who established the transatlantic commercial empire based on the staples of fur, timber and wheat. This book became the focal point around which the "Laurentian School" interpretation of Canadian history developed, the dominant interpretation of Canadian history until the 1960s. Included in the study are accounts of the merchants' attempts to establish an Assembly in Quebec, of relations between the merchants and the French-Canadian elite, of the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838 in Lower Canada, and of the Annexationist Movement of 1849.
