Abstract
Maude Abbott (1869-1940) graduated in arts from McGill in 1890, but was barred from pursuing a degree in medicine at the university because of her sex. She enrolled at Bishop's University and received her medical degree in 1894, the only woman in her class. The author outlines Abbott's postgraduate medical studies in Vienna, Austria, (1894-1897) before returning to a life-long career in the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University.
