A study of the mostly English-speaking Montreal businessmen who either signed or opposed the 1849 Annexation Manifesto calling for British North America's annexation to the United States following Britain's abolition of the Corn Laws, which ended preferential colonial trade. Also includes information on the role played by the Montreal Board of Trade in this affair.
