La crise à Montréal en 1849
Abstract
The burning of the Parliament Building in Montreal occurred on the night of April 25, 1849. The St. Anne's Market building lodging the Legislative Council and Assembly was burned down by English-speaking Tory rioters in retaliation for the colonial government passing the Rebellion Losses Bill. The protesters saw the bill as compensating those who participated in treasonous acts during the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838, as well as the hegemony of Francophones over Canada East's political process. The author outlines the Rebellion Losses Bill riots, the Annexationist Movement, the formation of the British American League, and reaction and fears towards the concept of responsible government.
