Abstract
The Scottish-born architect John Smith Archibald (1872-1934) immigrated to Montreal in 1893, first working for Edward Maxwell and in 1897 opening his own practice with Charles Jewett Saxe under the name Saxe & Archibald. The author points out that over his career, Archibald played a vital role in the creation of many of Montreal's landmark buildings, including the Bishop Court Apartments (1904), the Montreal Technical School (1909–11), additions to the now-demolished Queen's Hotel (1909, 1910–12, 1912–13, and 1925), Baron Byng High School (1921), the Montreal Forum (1924), the now-demolished Delorimier Downs Stadium (1927), the Masonic Memorial Temple (1928), the Royal Edward Institute (1931), and the Montreal Convalescent Hospital. (1931).
