Abstract
The biography of one of the early developers of the Lac Saint-Jean region of Quebec. Benjamin Alexander Scott (1859-1928) was a timber contractor, businessman, politician, and militia officer. In 1888, following the opening of the Quebec and Lake Saint John Railway, Scott and Horace Jansen Beemer built the Hôtel Roberval in Roberval on the southwest shore of Lac Saint-Jean, opening up the region to tourism. Scott also participated in opening the timber industry in the area, and acquired a sawmill in Roberval, and later pulp mills in the area. He was involved in railway development and hydro-electric development in the Lac Saint-Jean region. Scott also served as mayor of the parish municipality of Roberval from 1893 to 1906, and mayor of the town of Roberval in 1906 and 1907. Scott was one of the founders in 1900 of the 18th (Saguenay) Battalion of Infantry, which he commanded under the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
