Socio-Economic Portrait of the English-Speaking Community in Québec and Its Regions
Abstract
A socio-economic portrait of Anglophone Quebecers between 1971 and 2001. During this period, the English-speaking population in the province declined by twenty-five percent, from 13.1 percent of the overall population to 8.3 percent of the population. Between 1996 and 2001, 53,300 Anglophones left Quebec for other provinces while only 24,100 immigrated to Quebec from other provinces and 8,205 immigrated to the province from other countries. More than 82 percent of Anglophones lived in the Greater Montreal and peripheral regions (Montérégie, Laurentides et Lanaudière). Fifty-one percent of Anglophones during the period studied had a college or university education (compared to 38.8 for Francophones) while eight percent had less than grade 9 education (compared to 15.1 percent for Francophones). The mean average salary for Anglophones in 2001 was $31,693 compared to $27,145 for Francophones. Twice as many Anglophones (6.6 percent) earned over $75,000 in 2001 compared to Francophones (3.4 percent). Sixty-seven percent of Anglophones self-declared themselves as bilingual in 2001, compared to 37 percent for Francophones.
