Title
The Rise and Fall of Farming in a Marginal Area: The Gatineau Valley, Quebec
Abstract
The first settlers in the Gatineau Valley area were Philemon Wright and a group of friends and their families who arrived in Hull Township from the United States in 1800. Originally intent on farming, they soon discovered that the area was only marginally suitable for agriculture and turned to exploiting the timber resources of the area. Irish settlers began moving into the area in 1819. French Canadian settlers entered the area after 1850. Out-migration from farm areas began around the turn of the twentieth century. The author outlines how farming in the Gatineau Valley evolved in partnership with the lumber industry.
