Abstract
An outline and comparison of the lives and careers of the 150 female journalists, Francophone and Anglophone, in Quebec between 1880 and 1930. There were ninety-two women in the trade between 1926 and 1930 compared with only six between 1880 and 1885. After the First World War, approximately sixty percent of women journalists were Anglophones, but before 1915, Anglophones were in the minority. Though some women journalists worked at the profession on an occasional basis, the majority of those for whom data are available make it a career. Two important characteristics of this career for women were mobility and versatility. The author found that many women worked in periodicals, often under the mask of pseudonyms, and engaged in other social, philanthropic or literary activities.
