Title
The American Element in the Early Presbyterian Church in Montreal (1786-1824)
Abstract
A history of the establishment of Presbyterianism in Montreal in 1786 and of the break-away, in 1803, of American and some Scottish members from St. Gabriel Street Church (founded in 1792) to form the St. Peter Street congregation. The author points out that the St. Gabriel Street Church was the first Protestant church in Lower Canada, and carried on the Church of Scotland tradition of its founding members, most of whom were wealthy Scottish-born merchants in the fur trade.
