Abstract
Contains an autobiography of the Scottish-born James Smillie (1807-1885) in which he gives a detailed account of life in Quebec in the 1820s, and of the insecure climate in which engravers tried to make a living. Smillie was the first pictorial engraver to practice his trade in nineteenth-century Quebec.
