Title
La "rébellion de 1837" à travers le prisme du Montreal Herald. La refondation par les armes des institutions politiques canadiennes
Abstract
The author explores the role played by the English-language newspaper The Montreal Herald in opposing the rebellious uprising in 1837 by the supporters of the political Patriote party. Described by the author as an "ultra-Tory Orangeman newspaper", The Montreal Herald's editorial position was in opposition to the to the demands for predominance by the Patriotes and to Britain's Melbourne Cabinet's policy of conciliation. The radical Tories in the city organized themselves into an armed socio-political police militia, known as the Doric Club, and the author argues that the owner of The Montreal Herald (Adam Thom) encouraged the switch from a political struggle to an armed struggle.
