'A Story of Struggle and Splendid Courage': Anne Savage's Broadcasts of The Development of Art in Canada
Abstract
The Montreal-born artist and educator Anne Savage (1896-1971) gave an eight-part series of radio lectures on the CBC in January and February 1939 titled "The Development of Art in Canada." These twenty-five minute talks, broadcast nationally on Sunday evenings, traced a chronological progression through Canadian art. The author explores the way that Savage's broadcasts voiced a nationalistic narrative previously constructed by the National Gallery of Canada and strategically disseminated by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. She argues that Savage's chosen position as spokesperson for this narrative is consonant with the options open to women seeking to develop professional careers in the early decades of the twentieth century, and reveals Savage's own simultaneous agency and constraint with the developing narrative of Canadian art.
