Abstract
The Massachusetts-born Jonathan Sewall (1766-1839) moved to England with his loyalist parents in 1775 and came to Quebec in 1789 after studying law in England and New Brunswick. In 1790 Sewall was appointed attorney general of Quebec pro tempore, and in 1793 he was appointment solicitor general and inspector of the king's domain. Two years later he was appointed attorney general and advocate general, and in 1796 was elected to the Legislative Assembly. In 1808 Sewell was appointed Chief Justice of Lower Canada
