Title
Contact inter-ethnique et communication : Processus et consequences
Abstract
The authors discuss speech accommodation and social penetration theory and examines the relationship between the language behavior of members of different linguistics groups and the affective consequences of such contact. In addition, they also assess the influence of language confidence and power distribution on the events taking place during the contact. Four female university students, two Anglophones and two Francophones, were grouped into dyads according to their level of second language confidence and assigned randomly to one of three experimental conditions that varied their relative power during the interaction. The authors conclude that the results suggest that language behaviors and affective aspects constitute coherent phenomenon that are, however, relatively independent from one another. Both aspects are nevertheless subject to the complex interaction of the cultural origin of the participants, their degree of language confidence, the distribution of situational power, and the temporal evolution of the conversation.
