Abstract
Sir James Henry Craig (1748-1812) was the Governor-in-Chief of British North America from 1807 to 1811. The engraved portrait described by the author was commissioned from Levi Stevens (?-1832) during the election campaign of 1810. For a second time, Craig had dissolved the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada in an attempt to put down the Parti canadien. He seized the presses of the newspaper, Le Canadien, and imprisoned approximately 20 people, including the head of the Parti canadien. A subscription campaign was undertaken by Craig’s supporters in Lower Canada, primarily the English-speaking mercantile class, to have a “faithful” portrait done of the Governor. The engraved portrait by Stevens was among the first portraits printed in the colony.
