Title
Le Bas-Canada au début du XIXe siècle : une hypothèse
Abstract
An essay tracing the expansion of the Lower Canadian economy from 1790 to 1810. The authors argue that this expansion was encouraged in part by the timber and lumber trade, and in part by external events, which together created a mercantile mentality in the province. They point out that new social groups emergedduring this period (industrial, professional, and the beginning of proletarianization in the cities), and the development of a financial and banking system was established.
