Abstract
In 1826, the Irish-born Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan (1797-1880) competed for and won the post of Apothecary and Steward at the Montreal General Hospital. In 1827, he obtained his certificate to practice medicine in Lower Canada. O'Callaghan went on to become the editor of the Montreal reform newspaper, The Vindicator, and a supporter of the Louis-Joseph Papineau's Parti Patriote. Following the Rebellion of 1837, he fled to New York where he became the State Archivist.
