Title
La musique vocale à la cathédrale anglicane de Québec de 1832 à 1959: Origine et impact des décisions du conseil de fabrique et du conseil paroissial
Abstract
The author points out that the dual identity—as cathedral and parochial church—of the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Quebec City created many tensions in its congregation during the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. He notes that while the High Church supporters advocated a musical life closer to Catholic ostentatious practices with, for example, a surpliced boys’ choir, the Low Church worshippers, on the contrary, supported a refined musical aesthetic with a unifying vision of vocal music interpretation by the whole congregation. The author demonstrates how the musical life of the Anglican Cathedral, and more specifically matters pertaining to vocal music, were transformed from 1832 to 1959 by power struggles between and inside its vestry and its select vestry.
