Jori Smith, une figure de la modernité picturale québécoise : étude de case : le portrait d'enfant
Abstract
Well before the 1940s, Jori Smith (1907—2005) was considered to be a pioneer in the liberation of Quebec painting. Between landscape and abstraction, her work follows the lead of works which have reinvested painting the human figure. The author aims to situate Smith in the context of the time through a study of children's portraits carried out between 1930 and 1949 in Charlevoix. The author argues that the analysis shows that the portraits participate in building new conceptions of childhood and mark Jori Smith's adherence to a modern sensitivity founded on the spirits of observation and collection that underlie the great projects of preserving regional cultural heritage.
