Abstract |
The Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning was established by an Act of the Assembly of Lower Canada in 1801. Generally associated with founding of McGill University, the Royal Institution was also responsible for the origin and development of the first system of public education in Lower Canada. The author analyzes the Royal Institution’s papers held at McGill University, focusing on the historiographical debate surrounding the initial development of public education in the province.
