|
Abstract |
An introductory essay and catalogue of the works by the Irish-born painter, lithographer, and teacher of drawing James D. Duncan (1806-1881), who immigrated to Montreal in 1825. The author lists all of Duncan's known oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, book and magazine illustrations and prints. The author points out that the numerous views in oil, gouache, and water-colour of Montreal life and scenery, presenting landscape and enlivened with the anecdote of genre painting, established Duncan as a recorder par excellence of the city over several decades.
