Ezekiel Hart and the Oath Problem in the Assembly of Lower Canada
|
Abstract |
An examination of the anti-Semitic rhetoric that erupted in 1807 and 1808, from both Anglophones and Francophones, when Ezekiel Hart, a Jew, won election to Lower Canada's Legislative Assembly for Trois-Rivière. Hart was expelled from the Assembly because other members, mostly the Catholic Francophones, claimed that a Jew could not take an oath of loyalty on a Christian bible.
