Transmission et rétention de la langue maternelle dans la francophonie canadienne et chez les Québécoises et Québécois d’expression anglaise. Données statistiques de 2021
Abstract
The authors explain that in a 2021 Statistics Canada survey, in Quebec, about one in ten (11.0%) children aged 18 and under were part of a family with at least one English-speaking parent (Table 7). Among these children, just over a third (35.9%) lived in a family where both parents were English-speaking. Nearly half (46.2%) lived with a mixed-language parent household, meaning with only one English-speaking parent. In 21.7% of cases, it was the mother who was English-speaking, while in 24.5% of cases, it was the father. Just over one-sixth (17.9%) of these children lived with a single English-speaking parent: 13.6% with their mother and 4.2% with their father. The authors found that data on the transmission of English as a mother tongue among children with at least one English-speaking parent indicated that in 2021, in Quebec, about three-quarters (76.7%) had English as their mother tongue: 57.7% only English and 19.0% both English and French. The other children had only French as their mother tongue (21.7%) or a language other than English and French (1.5%).
