The Irish-born Mathew Hamilton Gault (1822-1887), who immigrated to Montreal in 1842, received a charter for The Sun Insurance Company of Montreal in 1865, but poor economic conditions prevents the company from becoming established. In 1871, the Sun Mutual Life Insurance Company of Montreal began operations, and in 1882 the company's name changes to the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. Between 1880 and the turn of the twentieth century, Sun Life's operations extends to the United Kingdom and the United States, and throughout the West Indies and to Bermuda, South America and several markets in Asia including China, Hong Kong, India and Japan. In 1979, Sun Life's head office moved to Toronto. The essay lists officers as well as assets, annual income and new yearly policies issued between 1872 and 1910.
