Dimensions of Ethnic Identity: An Example from Quebec
|
Abstract |
An exploration of the role of cultural background, language and geographic region as factors in the process of ethnic identity by English- and French-speaking high school students in Quebec. The authors found that the students made similarity judgements among all possible combinations of these three factors and the anchor stimulus "Myself". They conclude that language and cultural background are two important dimensions of ethnic identity, but geographic region is not as important as might be expected. The English-speaking students perceived themselves as very distant from stimulus levels that were inconsistent with respect to cultural background and language, while the French-speaking students only reacted this way to stimulus labels involving French Canadians who spoke English mainly.
