Abstract
The author points out that the linguistic mobility in the Outaouais region (circa 1989) results in a slight anglicization of its Francophone population, at a net anglicization rate of about two percent which has remained relatively constant since 1971. He also notes that the net language shift from French to English is somewhat more frequent in the Hull metropolitan area than in the more rural regions, but is partly made up for in the urban core by some francization of Allophones. The author argues that the growing difference between the language situation on each side of the interprovincial border may result more from differential internal migration patterns based on linguistic affinities, than from the direct impact of Quebec's language laws (22 or 101) on the language behaviour of the Outaouais population.
