Stewart Derbishire's Report to Lord Durham on Lower Canada, 1838
|
Abstract |
A reprint of a report by British lawyer, journalist and adventurer Stewart Derbishire (1794 or 1795-1863), who was hired by Lord Durham in 1838 to gather information on rebel activities and on the causes of the Lower Canadian uprising. Derbishire outlined in his report the grievances of the Patriotes and the habitants towards the government of Lower Canada and the English-speaking elite of the colony, but concluded that the habitants had "no practical grievances," that it was "the malaria of political agitation" which had produced the rebellion.
