'Africa's deadly enemy' : An Analysis of Canadian Newspaper Coverage of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic in Africa
|
Abstract |
The author analyses the coverage of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa in eight Canadian English-language newspapers, including Montreal's The Gazette, between 2000 and 2003. She locates her corpus within the wider discourses surrounding the HIV/AIDS pandemic, as well as the study of racism, (neo/post) colonialism and 'Africanism,' and Critical Discourse Analysis. Tracing the various ways in which Western countries has constructed and portrayed Africa in the past, the author argues that much of this tradition persists, as clearly reflected in the analysis and excerpts of the articles under scrutiny in her thesis.
