Title |
From the UK to Valleyfield, Quebec
|
Abstract |
The author explains how Valleyfield's Montreal Cotton Mill, under the entrepreneurial guidance of Ulster-born Andrew Frederick Gault (1833-1903), known during his life as the Cotton King of Canada, enticed skilled British immigrants to the town southwest of Montreal. The author mentions that an article in the Times of London of October 11, 1907, titled "Recruiting Skilled Labour for Canada," refers to the largest need for skilled labour being for spinners and weavers for the cotton mills of Montreal and Valleyfield, with 135 workers having recently come from Lancashire.
