Abstract |
The author's intention is to demonstrate how the field of cultural-historical geography can contribute to a greater understanding of Francophone-Anglophone relations in Quebec. He focuses on a case study of the eastern portion of Quebec's Lower North Shore where Francophone Catholics, Anglophone Catholics and Anglophone Protestants lived in religiously and linguistically segregated outports for nearly 150 years. The author examines genealogical and migration data and studies the institutional history of the Lower North Shore. On the basis of these data, he concludes that it becomes apparent that the conflict between French-and English-speaking residents was not so much the result of out-right racism and antagonism, but rather a natural outgrowth of the initial settlement patterns and subsequent socio-spatial evolution of the Lower North Shore.
