Abstract |
Reuben Brainin (1862-1939), a pioneer of the modern Hebrew literary and national renaissance, was invited to Montreal in 1912 to edit the Yiddish newspaper "Der Keneder Adler" (The Jewish Eagle). He transformed this publication into a tribune for the Jewish community's socio-economic, political and cultural problems. Brainin advocated the creation of a democratic, representative Jewish organization, an idea which challenged Montreal's Jewish community's plutocratic leadership. His efforts led to the creation of the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1919.
