Ordering in Bulk: Canada’s Postwar Immigration Policy and the Recruitment of Contract Workers from Italy
|
Abstract |
Between 1946 and 1976, an estimated 440,000 Italians immigrated to Canada, most of whom settled in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. Although the federal government initially hesitated to admit Italians because of nativist opposition to them, the political influence of major industrial employers, who wanted “bulk labour,” led to their eventual acceptance.
