Persistence of Ethnicity : A Study of Social and Spatial Boundaries on the Eastern Lower North Shore, 1820-1970

Abstract |
The author examines the settlement history and social geography of the five eastern-most settlements of the Lower North Shore of Quebec. He focuses primarily on the social, spatial, and demographic evolution of the ethnic communities, including Francophone Catholics, Anglophone Catholics, and Anglophone Anglicans, which have been established there since the 1820s. The changing nature of the social and spatial boundaries which characterize inter-ethnic group relations on the Shore is examined by the author through analysis of the shifting roles of language and religion as the major criteria of ethnicity and ethnic group identity. The author examines genealogical and migration data and studies the institutional history of the Lower North Shore. Based on these data, he concludes that it becomes apparent that the conflict between French-and English-speaking residents was not so much the result of out-right racism and antagonism, but rather a natural outgrowth of the initial settlement patterns and subsequent socio-spatial evolution of the Lower North Shore. Special attention is paid to recent marriage as the principal mechanism through which the ethnic composition of the Lower North Shore is being altered.
