Abstract |
The Montreal Repertory Theatre (MRT), following the Little Theatre tradition of Antoine as well as later theatric developments in Britain, Ireland and the United States, mounted a regular series of play productions every year from 1930 to 1961. The MRT was founded on November 23, 1929, at Westmount's Victoria Hall. The following year, the MRT produced its first play, A.A. Milne's The Perfect Alibi. The author points out that at a time when no alternatives existed in Montreal, the MRT provided theatre education at a high level and helped in the formation of many distinguished careers. The author lists the major productions of the MRT between 1930 and 1961. Its last production in 1961 was Luigi Pirandello's Henry IV.
