| Abstract |
A short biography of Eliza Agnes Joy (1840-1912), born in the village of St. Armand West , Missisquoi County, in Quebec's Eastern Townships, who left home at the age of 16, joined a travelling circus and then became an actress before marrying Prussian Prince Felix zu Salm-Salm in 1862. With the Prince, the now Princess Salm-Salm was involved in the American Civil War, the Mexican Revolution, and the Prussian war with France (he as a soldier and she working in field hospitals). Some American writers claim Princess Salm-Salm was born in Vermont, but the author shows that the 1851 census for St. Armand West indicates she was born in Canada.
