The Jews in Canada (in North America): An Eastern European View of the Montreal Jewish Community in 1884
|
Abstract |
Translation of an article originally published in Hebrew in the Russian-based periodical ha-Melitz in 1884. Details religious, educational, social and political concerns that were relevant to Jews in the late nineteenth century. Not much is known about the Polish-born Yosef Eliyahu Bernstein, other than he was a relative newcomer to Montreal. Ira Robinson states that "Bernstein reports most accurately on the Ashkenazic congregation, Shaar Hashomayim, which he is most likely to have attended, and least accurately on the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation, Shearith Israel, which he seemingly knew only through hearsay."
