Abstract |
William Hales Hingston (1829-1907) was chief surgeon at Montreal’s Hotel Dieu Hospital for twenty-five years, president of the Montreal City and District Savings Bank, and mayor of Montreal for two terms between 1875 and 1885. As mayor, he established a municipal board of health, the first of its kind in Canada, and fought unremittingly against those who opposed public vaccination. He later spent eleven years as a Senator in Parliament.
