Abstract |
A study of the newspaper commentaries on Frederick Brown, a British actor who served as the first manager of Montreal's Theatre Royal in 1825-26. The author wishes to point out the extent of serious theatrical criticism in Montreal and Quebec City newspapers in the early nineteenth century, the cultural relationship between the press and the theatre in Canadian towns, and the contribution of theatrical troupes to the spread of literate culture in the colony.
